Weekend Update

I approached this weekend with little planned – in a good way! Business travel Monday and Tuesday had left me feeling a bit tired.

Dinner on Friday with my friend Julie popped up as an option. We had a drink at Jane and then dinner at The Dutch. Very fun catching up.

I’d like to thank the Academy…the CVS Academy

That exists, right?

It totally should because I need to thank someone for acknowledging my super saver-ness. I got this email Monday:

CVS

This wasn’t a big surprise. Anyone who has snooped in my bathroom knows I’m a health and beauty hoarder. Continue reading

I bought it

Actually, I bought them. Two cocktail dresses. I went looking for one dress for my company’s upcoming holiday party but the prices were so good that I bought two. Total damage with sales and a Lord & Taylor coupon: $220.

First option is this silver number from Anne Klein.

My Brooklyn Saturday

How was your weekend?

Brooklyn is such a big borough – NYC’s 2nd largest and most populous – that I sometimes feel bad for not exploring more. On Saturday, I saw friends and checked out new-to-me places without ever leaving BK. I loved it!

First I met up with my new friend Sarah in Bushwick. We had brunch at Roberta’s and then walked – and walked – to the Jonathan Adler warehouse sale.

Brunch was terrific.

I bought jeans!

Remember my jean stress? Rejoice! I found a pair of jeans I love:

Via Polyvore

They’re DKNY Jeans, Skinny-Leg Tuxedo-Stripe, Mamba (!!) Wash.

It’s a good news/bad news situation.

The good: I found them at Marshall’s on sale for just $29. The bad: because they’re already at Marshall’s and priced so low, I probably won’t find them elsewhere, perhaps in another color.

Macys has a few pairs left as of press time. If you buy, go a size down. They run big.

I bought ‘em: Bussola Trapani boots

I got these boots at DNA in Williamsburg. My mother will hate them.

What should I wear with them?

I almost bought these Steve Madden boots before spotting the Bussolas. The Steve Madden pair was a little cheaper, but far less comfortable. Plus I preferred the extra buckles.

What will you be buying for fall?

I went to Cape Cod – Part One: Sandwich

As you may have seen from my tweets, I went to Massachusetts to visit one of my favorite people.

The weather cooperated Saturday so we took a day trip to Cape Cod. I had never been!

We made the most of the beautiful day, checking out three towns.

First: Sandwich

We browsed at the Sandwich Artisans show at the public library.

Sandwich

I bought myself a pair of earrings from Mei Mei of Lexington.

Later we had lunch at the Brown Jug, also in Sandwich, on their charming patio.

Have you been to Sandwich? If so, what did you think?

Next: Hyannis

I bought it: MICHAEL Michael Kors Gideon Sandal

I needed a new pair of heels for an event.

Yes, I do know the difference between “need” and “want.” The event in question actually had “stiletto” in its title and the invitation made it clear I’d feel dumb if I wore wedges.

I bought these:

I was nervous because – hello! – ankles. But the straps of the sandals made me feel somewhat secure.

Guess what? These shoes are actually pretty comfortable. Like any shoes, my feet hurt after a few hours and my bum ankle is never pain-free. But in the grand scheme of things, I got just what I needed from the Gideon sandal.

I like ‘em enough to buy them in black.

Note: the toe box is narrow so I went up a half-size.

The Not-For-Everyone Gift

When my friend Candace visited me a few weeks ago, we rambled all over the part of Brooklyn where I life. One of our stops was In God We Trust, a boutique on a quieter block of Bedford Avenue.

We browsed and tried on sunglasses.

Then I noticed these roughly engraved pendants. Look closely.

I won’t be buying one of these R rated charms for my mother. But for one of my smart ass friends? Perhaps. How about you?

Things I love about NYC: Ricky’s

When I lived in DC, I forgot about Ricky’s.

Via plaztikmag.com

My bad. Ricky’s is awesome.

Picture a supermarket but filled only with beauty items. I inevitably go there for one thing and leave with, like, seven.

This time I stood in confused awe by the styling wands. Ricky’s had such a range of options that I realized I needed to do some research before committing.

Paralysis by analysis.
