Where are they now – real estate edition

Remember my apartment search when I was moving back to NYC from DC? I can’t forget. I might be scarred for life.

Something made me look back at the apartments I considered to see what rents look like now.

A penthouse studio at now goes for $3450 at 95 Christopher Street.

My weird obsession

You know I hate that word, obsessed. But I didn’t know how to give this post a catchy, make-you-want-to-read-it title without including obsession.

And it’s not an addiction like the TV show. I will never ever eat the stuffing of a couch cushion–promise.

My weird thing to do is this: when I see a tiny sink in a New York City restaurant, I take a picture, often with my free hand in the pic for scale.

I have a crush on Charlie Hunnam

After all of the gloomy stuff I’ve been posting, I thought those of you who enjoy looking at handsome men deserved both a break and a treat.

(Don’t worry – a woman crush post is coming. I promise. Something for everyone.)

How hot is Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy fame?

Sometimes people are incredibly kind

Friday, July 17, 2015

My father died at 2 am. It is 10 am and I am already back in Northeastern PA at my parents’ mother’s house. Everything is terrible. Nothing is comfortable. It’s easily one of the top five worst days of my life (and at least two of the others happened in the days just prior).

Compounding the misery, I don’t really have much to wear. I left NYC for Philly straight from a work meeting on Monday, with just the clothes on my back. There are a few t-shirts and stuff in the drawers of the dresser in my childhood bedroom, but not much else. Katie kindly brought me a suitcase with some clothes on Tuesday, but I have already worn everything in it–other than the lacy yellow thong I found mixed in.*

This is how I ended up dressed like this in a J Crew factory store.

My dude looks like my dad 2.0

Remember this post about women who are dating or married to men who look like their dads?

Well, Zoe Kravitz has topped them ALL. Boyfriend Twin Shadow looks a lot like her dad Lenny Kravitz.

What do you think – creepy? understandable? something else?

“What if President Obama were a hipster?”

Here is a nice break from all of the heavy stuff I’ve been posting here about Dad and life recently. Please enjoy.

Artist Amit Shimoni creates illustrations of world leaders and historical figures, but reimagined as hipsters.

Maybe Hillary should consider giving this silver + purple look a go.

Maiden name? How about it’s just MY name.

If you’ve been coming here for a while, you’ll recall that I posted here about how I have no interest in changing my name if I ever get married (seemingly unlikely, right?).

But then I read this article and learned more about the history of women from being discouraged from keeping their own names. I was outraged.

NYT

What would be great, in my opinion, is if the NY Times and other publications who announce marriages stopped assuming anyone would change his or names. Mention it if they do as the exception.

[This article came out about a week ago. I sat on this post for a few days, trying to calm down about the subject and word this post in a way that doesn’t offend friends who have chosen to change their names.]

Were you aware of state laws like this? Does this information change how you feel about the issue?

Magic Mike XXL, the unexpected feminist movie

Just like I did re: The Bachelorette – or rather didn’t do – I won’t recap Magic Mike XXL. Not because I didn’t enjoy it (I enjoyed it A LOT) but because other, better writers have already done so.

Here are a few highlights from their write-ups interspersed with pics and gifs from this totally Oscar-caliber* movie as well as one or two of my own thoughts.

If you’re concerned about spoilers – and you really shouldn’t be because the paper-thin plot is Not The Point – I guess stop reading. But you’d be missing stuff like this:

I can’t stop thinking about her

Sorry, I totally click-baited you. This post is about a cat. I’ll bet you thought was about everybody’s current lady crush, Ruby Rose of Orange is the New Black.
