Cheap thrills

You know how I started spending all kinds of cash on skin care? I’m still doing that.

But two of my current favorite makeup products* are inexpensive items I picked up at CVS.

[Although both are Maybelline, this is not a sponsored post.]

First, this brow pomade crayon. You know I love to talk about eyebrows.

I started using the crayon – in blonde – after this other brow product (which I bought in transparent) started making my skin breakout.

I like the way it fills in my brows without making them look too strong.

Second, I found another lipstick I love.

I have to have it: Amway light-up lip gloss

How cool is this?

light up gloss.jpg

My friend Chrissy was in town from San Francisco. Before we went to Lucali, we were at an event at the Darby Downstairs. When she whipped out her lip gloss in the darkened club, I was impressed.

Chrissy always looks fabulous so I was expecting her lip gloss to be Chanel, or maybe Bobbi Brown. Nope.

“Amway!” she revealed. You can buy light-up lipgloss (and other items) from her here

Note: not a sponsored post. Just a cool tip I wanted to share.

Things I love about NYC: Ricky’s

When I lived in DC, I forgot about Ricky’s.

Via plaztikmag.com

My bad. Ricky’s is awesome.

Picture a supermarket but filled only with beauty items. I inevitably go there for one thing and leave with, like, seven.

This time I stood in confused awe by the styling wands. Ricky’s had such a range of options that I realized I needed to do some research before committing.

Paralysis by analysis.

Things I love about NYC: eyebrow salons

Me: That smells great. Is it lavender?

Eyebrow threading lady: it’s baby powder

Me: Oh. OK.

She put something on a tissue and dabbed it on my eyebrows before threading them. How was I to know?!

I was tempted to take this picture with me to the brow place today. Aren’t hers great? But instead I let the woman do her thing and follow the natural shape of things.

Threading hurts a little, but I much prefer it to having a stranger wield hot wax over my face. The price is also right: just $6 at my neighborhood spot. (although if I worked for Google, it would be free)

I pop in for a touch-up every month or so and then tweeze between visits.

Have you tried threading?

Epic eyebrows

In my twenties, I appear to have issued a fatwa…

On my eyebrows. My mother told me I was doing it wrong.

But I didn’t listen because at some point, I used to get compliments on my eyebrows.

Kind of decent here, right?
