Good Food: Where I like to eat (and drink) in Manhattan

I have posted here and there about some of my favorite restaurants in NYC but never done a full dining guide, per se.

This also is not a dining guide – too overwhelming. Plus I’m a somewhat picky eater and not what anyone would call a food expert. It is decidedly not a trendy list–look elsewhere for that.

But I do have my favorites so here are some of them.

Best square pie

GG’s in the East Village. I just love this little spot. From its delicious pizza to its charming pressed tin ceiling to the always-fun playlists, GG’s is a go-to. And the cocktail list is terrific.

Best fried chicken

Root & Bone, it’s yours. I have never been disappointed. Plus the service is so thoughtful.

Best quick breakfast in Midtown Manhattan

Little Collins or Ground Central. I wish Little Collins were a bit more spacious, and I wish Ground Central were quieter, but both are gems in an area dominated by chains.

My New Year’s plans involve a giant kiss off to 2016

I had just assumed that 2016 would end on one high note – the Bowery Collective‘s annual festivities. And I would have been perfectly content to do so. It’s a beautiful, fun gathering with amazing food and drink.

But then, one of my friends from my July vacation asked “any interest in going back to Saint Martin for New Year’s?”

Do you like your bananas frozen?

Update: the 2017 BoCo Resort event is May 21. Get your tickets here and use promo code Jen for 20% off.

Of course you do. Who doesn’t appreciate a frozen banana? How about a blender drink?

My friends at Bowery Collective recognized that and created a new event: BoCo Resort. Thanks to them, I’ll be looking ahead to summer with a cocktail in my hand–at least one of them will surely come from Brugal Rum’s daiquiri cart.

Therapi Band will be on-site playing reggae and more.

The details:

335 Bowery, 2nd floor, New York City

Just call me the New Year’s Eve fairy

It’s only early December. If you’re a normal person – aka not me – you haven’t started stressing about making plans for New Year’s Eve.

But if you’re a weirdo like me, you want to lock it in. You don’t want to be left out, without something fun to do. Or maybe you just want to resist temptation to do nothing but watch New Year’s Rockin’ Eve from the comfort of your couch.

This is how I spent last New Year’s Eve with friends. Pretty swank, eh?

We had a dedicated server who made sure we always had cocktails and food from the various stations AND a butler–who was so young and handsome; I probably complimented him a bit too much, poor guy. Continue reading

I am a New Year’s Eve early adopter (for once)

Every year, there’s angst. Where should I spend New Year’s Eve and with whom? NYE can be hell for the single and the unmarried.

Whatever. This year I feel great about my plans because my friends at Bowery Collective are throwing an elegant affair at my favorite hangout, Bowery Hotel.

NYE2015

If you have joined me at Whiskey Washback or Arte Agave, you have some idea of what to expect. But this is New Year’s so it will be extra special. Snazzy even.

Come for the Champagne cocktail station or the scotch lounge with live jazz. Or just come to hang out with my friends and me.

Just don’t dare ask for a Coors Light, please.

Because my readers are awesome, I’m offering you a 40% discount on tickets. To get the discounted rate, use the promo code ‘Jen’. Tickets are available now here.

The discount will go away so don’t dilly-dally. See you on New Year’s Eve.

Pics from the weekend

Whiskey Washback was terrific! My friends Courtney, Caroline and I had a great time drinking and eating (and drinking some more).

We drank Manhattans, and Bushmills with iced espresso and whipped cream.

There was also hot apple cider with your choice of Jack Daniels, Bulleit bourbon or apple moonshine. Continue reading

Drinks on me

Sort of.

Remember when I told you about this event?

Walt and Bowery Collective are doing it again. Whiskey Washback, the next edition, will take place on Friday, October 24 at the Bowery Hotel.

(AKA my favorite place.)

If you like whiskey and bourbon (or you want to learn more about both), here’s your chance: Bowery Collective is bringing back Whiskey Washback on Friday 10/24 at Bowery Hotel.

And if you think the brown spirits are a bit scary (you shouldn’t–trust me), know that there will be cocktails available in addition to straight tastes.

This awesome event will sell out so if you’re interested, get tickets here ASAP.

To get 25% off your ticket, use promo code JEN. See you there!

Things I learned this weekend

First, a whiskey sour is a terrific summer cocktail. So is Bowery Hotel’s Luna de Fresa ideally made by Walter Easterbrook.

Next, a backhanded compliment is still a compliment.

As in “this is the best I’ve ever seen you look” and “you’ve lost a ton of weight” when said by a handsome, but socially awkward, man.

On the other hand, if my mother said either thing to me, I wouldn’t speak to her for a week.

Also, contrary to this articlefitness classes are not 50% easier the second time around.

Still, this notion got me in the door for Pure Barre class #2. Maybe the third time will be the charm. Hopefully. You know how I feel about classes.

I’m not the first person to say “no” to being a bridesmaid.

This $50 Banana Republic top has a bit of magic to it. I’m not surprised it’s mostly sold out in white.

Finally, Tinder is still hilarious and alarming. (NSFW)

What did you learn this weekend?

How was your weekend?

My weekend started a little early with Arte Agave on Thursday.

Arte Agave

It was awesome! I hope those of you who attended had as much fun as my friends and me, enjoying margarita popsicles, terrific live music and tiny hats. Continue reading
