My bedroom – progress report

Greeting from Dullsville! I haven’t been posting much recently because my life recovering from surgery has been really boring. As it should be, I guess.

Before my surgery, I began taking steps to overhaul the look of my bedroom. I ordered a new bed and dresser, hoping both would be ready for delivery pre-op (they were not).

Naturally Pottery Barn emailed to offer 9/21, my surgery date, as the first available delivery date.

On a much lighter note, I got a sweet surprise in the mail

In the midst of this mess, my friend Eimear who is so wonderful and strong, sent me this wonderful treat: a Tata Harper Try Me Kit.

Eimear and I met through Twitter (although she’s on hiatus now) and she has done some guest posts here. I hate to imagine a Twitter-less world because there’s virtually no way Eimear and I would have crossed paths. She isn’t just a kind, fiercely supportive friend–she’s also kind of my skincare guru as I work hard to become higher maintenance. Continue reading

Guest post by @eimski: Organizing, Polyvore and Other Good Stuff

How do you organize?

I am an organizer by nature. I like to plan in advance for all eventualities. If I am stressed or anxious I usually find that several hours of organizing calms my mind. Yes, I am Eimear and I have an organization addiction.

This fascination with planning extends to my trip wardrobes.  Recently when I visited NYC I let slip to @1chicklette that I use Polyvore to outfit plan prior to traveling. She found it fascinating and suggested I write a post on my reasons for using it, so here you have it.

The first question that I know people will have is why.  Well, ever since I first saw Clueless I have been fascinated by the idea of having a database of all the clothes I own and being able to press a button ala Cher Horowitz to generate an outfit idea.

I recently discovered that Polyvore somewhat allows you to do this. You can add pictures of any items you have purchased from any online stores (such as Gap, Old Navy, ShopBop etc.) to your ‘Items’ and from there create pictorial ‘Sets’ (basically outfits) using pre created themed templates.

Guest post: @eimski on colored wedding gowns

Here’s the third in a series of guest posts from the wonderful Eimear.

While visiting @1chicklette a few months back, we discussed pink wedding dresses and she suggested that I write a guest post for her on them. Lo and behold less than two weeks later, Jessica Biel married Justin Timberlake in pink, and posed for the cover with her new husband nearly kicking her in the head and making this post all the more relevant.

(Did anybody else find it funny that People put Britney on the cover as well??)

Colored gowns have been in vogue for years. During World War I and II and in the post war periods, many brides could not afford expensive and elaborate lace and silk white gowns and many turned to colored dresses and smart suits. My own grandmother married my grandfather in a pale blue/gray suit nearly seventy years ago. When I got married off white was the color to have–mine was a cream, lace concoction). It seems more and more brides these days are embracing the color trend for their big day.

Here are my best and worst celebrity colored gowns. Continue reading

Guest post: @eimski on PopSugar Must Have Box

The better monthly surprise

In the middle of my BirchBox experience, Popsugar.com started to promote their Must Have box which launched in July. It was pricier than the BirchBox at $35 per month, but promised each box would contain products with a minimum retail value of $150.* I decided to give it a try – I could do one month and cancel if it sucked.

The first month my pink box arrived, I was very excited. Upon opening, I was surprised to find a beach tote, a full-sized Body Drench body scrub, moisturizer, two full-sized Ilia lipsticks, two Kind bars (delicious by the way) and two RGB nail polishes.

The RGB nail polishes alone retail for $16 each and the Ilia lipsticks are $24 each. The nail polish was super long-wearing and even with a cheap top coat, lasted eight impressive days with no chipping.

When friends visit

Last week during the heat wave, I got to see my friend Eimear and have an amazing dinner at Frankies 570. That’s Frankies version of a Hemingway daiquiri in Eimski’s hand below.

Eimski and I last hung out in Austin. Continue reading
