Mr. Joyce was one of my favorite and best teachers in high school. I’m so glad to hear he hasn’t slowed down at all since retiring.

Moosic cyclist to attend White House gathering

The 1,500 miles a 60-year-old Moosic man cycled on behalf of President Barack Obama helped win votes in November. It also earned the political volunteer and his wife an invitation to visit the White House next week.

From August until the November presidential election, Patrick Joyce, a retired Riverside teacher, rode his bike to many area communities – Stroudsburg, Hazleton, Lewisburg, State College, Williamsport, Harrisburg and Lancaster- in an effort to convince people to vote for the president.

During his bike rides, he’d struggle uphill, sometimes at inclines up to two miles long to arrive at his destinations. Along the way, he’d stop to register people to vote and then make 150 or so phone calls to registered voters. Some days he’d knock on doors.

For his unique way of supporting the president’s campaign, Mr. Joyce and his wife, Ann, will attend a holiday reception at the White House on Tuesday. While he has cycled to the nation’s capital, Mr. Joyce said he will drive for this trip.

“I don’t intend to put my wife on the handlebars,” he said.
