The perfect sweater – via @Athleta

For someone who loves Sweater Weather as much as I do, I struggle to find the PERFECT sweater, seemingly over and over again each winter.

I am never Satisfied.

(Sorry, I am presently listening to this song from the Hamilton Mixtape on repeat.)

The perfect sweater to me is one that just works whether I’m going to a movie with friends or running errands. It’s comfortable and yet stylish, a step up (at least) from your nicest sweatshirt. The perfect sweater can’t be itchy or too tight or so loose it makes me look like a trash heap.

After a few wearings, I often decide something is wrong with the newest sweater. The sleeves or body are too short. It isn’t soft enough. The material has pilled. It shrinks with laundering. Etc.

Recently I had a week-long business-and-personal trip and, as usual, I packed poorly for it.

I had business in Dallas (somewhat warm), and then flew to Scranton (via Charlotte) for a night before driving to Pittsburgh with my mother. Pennsylvania temps were noticeably cooler than Dallas – DUH. I had only brought my new motorcycle jacket as outerwear which was stupid given that we were going to be outside a lot, including at a nighttime outdoor football game.

So I went shopping in Pittsburgh and luckily I found a new favorite sweater (as well as another coat. More on that later).

Athleta’s Ravine Tunic is my Perfect Sweater. I love its relaxed fit and loose turtleneck. It keeps me warm, but not too warm. And because it’s a wool blend, no itching!

I got the sweater in black which has, unfortunately, sold out, but it comes in other colors. I’m buying the white for sure, and maybe the red too.

Athleta has some other great items. I want these pants for lounging around, and am waiting for this cashmere tunic to go on sale

Here are a few other sweaters with Perfect potential:

Motorcycle jackets are over

I wanted a moto jacket for years. Black, leather, classic. So what if I’m not cool (anymore?) and don’t ride motorcycles.

I knew I was opposed to suede. And I didn’t want a color. Although I had a flirtation with a dark pink Haute Hippie one, because you know me and pink.

The challenge? My long torso and a desire not to spend a gazillion dollars on another coat. I have a lot of coats.

Remember when I said I needed a new bed?

I don’t use phrases like feng shui often, but here am I, thinking about it in relation to my bedroom.

Something hasn’t feel right in the boudoir since I moved in. I love my new apartment, but the bedroom arrangement and styling attention. The room feels cramped; the worst part being that I have just six or seven inches between the end of my queen size bed and ancient dresser, both from Crate and Barrel.

My bedroom is also way, way too bright most mornings (and some afternoons too when I feel like being lazy). I need to add room-darkening curtains to the existing shades that came with the apartment.

With my upcoming surgery, I am going to be spending more time in my bedroom. I want it to feel as good as possible. Continue reading

Summer of Suck 2.0 – Part Five: The Giant Jug

If you’re just tuning in, start here.

As news of my adrenal mass started to sink in, I realized it was time to start making plans. I drafted Mom to take care of me (obviously) for the period when I’ll be in the hospital for surgery and immediately after, and I thought about how to tell the people at work. Knowing that I will be out of commission post-op for four to six weeks, I made plans for some essential business travel.

So there I was in Los Angeles, one of my favorite places. It was a productive trip with lots of meetings and a little fun in the form of attending After Paradise again (thanks Millsy!). I met two charming ladies, Catherine Giudici Lowe and Katie Lowes of Scandal, and one handsome man, Samuel Lowe.

He’s so cute!

I bought it: Helmut Lang Magna “Sweatshirt”

It’s like I just knew that winter wasn’t about to end anytime soon.

In February, I was browsing in Bloomingdale’s SoHo when I found the coat.

Helmut 2Black, substantial-feeling like a varsity jacket, fur-lined hood and on sale. A big sale. Even less than the Final Sale price above.

“MINE,” I thought.

It’s called the Magna sweatshirt, but that’s a bit of a misnomer. This is no sweatshirt. It’s warm and luxurious and just right for this long-ass winter we’re having in NYC.

The Magna seems to be sold out, but Amazon has a similar Helmut Lang coat (and for about half the regular price).

What can I say? I love coats.

I survived the mother-daughter weekend!

I had a mother-daughter weekend in the DC area. A cousin got married and Mom asked me to be her date. Dad is doing pretty well, but his health ups and downs mean he’s less likely to enjoy all of the standing around a wedding reception can entail, or a four-hour car ride.

I was [mostly] happy to step in, for the chance to see relatives and to try to see old friends in DC, time permitting.

And to see my mother too, yes. So long as she didn’t comment on my weight, hairstyle, lack of boyfriend and/or failure to visit.

The wedding was lovely.

Treat yo self continues

Maybe it’s the medicine I’m on since my head injury.

(I googled it after the fact and learned the pill is an old school, tricyclic antidepressant. No wonder I’m so happy!)

This was just the beginning.

Subsequently I bought a desk for my bedroom on Joss & Main. The white version may be sold out, but the espresso desk was still in stock last time I looked.

I also decided I needed this bag for Fall. Tory Burch had a big sale, OK? Continue reading

Treat yo self weekend

My Friday started with an MRI.

(You’re probably wondering “how does that qualify as a treat?” Just trust me.)

After I got my head examined, I had to run some other personal errands so I took the day off. It was a beautiful day in NYC – very unlike our typical Augusts – and I was feeling better than I have most days since the concussion. Continue reading

Airport shopping in Dubai

Hi friends! I have missed you.
I’m in Dubai on my way from a wonderful time in Kenya.

Don’t worry: I didn’t buy any of these.

I also considered buying a hookah just to see my friends’ reaction as I boarded the plane. But cooler heads prevailed.

I also didn’t buy any Arabic lady fiction (because I will be asleep all the way to NYC).
